How to make a PDF under 200 KB from documents

Admission and recruitment portals often want certificates as a single PDF under a size limit. Here's how to make one from phone photos.

Updated 31 October 2026

Photograph each page well

  • Lay the document flat on a dark table so its edges are clear.
  • Hold the phone straight above it in daylight; avoid the flash, which leaves a bright spot.
  • Fill the screen with the page. One photo per page.

Build the PDF

  1. Open ExamPic and switch to Documents to PDF.
  2. Add all the page photos. Reorder with the arrows and rotate any sideways page.
  3. Pick the maximum size your portal allows: 100 KB, 200 KB, 300 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB or 2 MB.
  4. Tick Make it look scanned for marksheets and certificates. It turns the paper white and the text crisp, which also makes the file much smaller.
  5. Download. The result line shows the page count and final size.

What "Make it look scanned" does

A phone photo of a page has a grey or yellow tint, a shadow at one edge and soft text. The scan option converts each page to greyscale, sets the paper to white and the text to black based on that page's own brightness, and slightly sharpens the contrast. The result reads like a flatbed scan, and white paper compresses far better, so more pages fit in the same size.

Leave it off for colour documents where colour matters, such as a photo ID or a certificate with a coloured seal.

Which documents usually need a PDF

  • Class 10 and 12 marksheets, and degree or semester marksheets
  • Caste, income, EWS, domicile or disability certificates
  • Experience letters and NOCs for job applications
  • Identity proof such as an Aadhaar or PAN card, front and back as two pages

Read what the portal asks for: some want one PDF per document, others want everything in a single file.

If it won't fit

Each page needs roughly 25–60 KB to stay readable. Ten pages in 200 KB is too tight. Split the documents into separate PDFs if the portal allows, or upload only the pages it asks for, such as the final marksheet rather than every semester's.
